It was the start of the Brunello di Montalcino adventure: a story that is still running, bringing to the world of patrons and wine lovers a wonderful Italian wine, perfect for meat and game. The Brunello di Montalcino as we know it was born in 1888, by the Clemente’s grandson, Ferruccio Biondi Santi.It is after the Second World War that many other wine producers follow the path of Biondi Santi family.In 1968 the Brunello becomes a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata,  Designation of Origin) wine. In 1980 the Montalcino terroir grants the status of DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, Controlled designation of origin guaranteed). Right now the producers of the Brunello di montalcino wine are almost 200. The Brunello… RulesWhat are the requirements for a “true” Brunello di Montalcino? Of course, the production area: within the “Comune (municipality) di Montalcino”. The variety of grapes: only the Sangiovese Brunello. The maximum yield of grapes: 8 tons per hectare. The Brunello must mandatorily age for 2 years in oak casks, then for 4 months (or 6 months for the Riserva selection) in bottle. The bottling must take place in the Comune di Montalcino. The bottles must be of the Bordeaux type. The Brunello di Montalcino can be sold after 5 years from the production, after six years for the Riserva.
