We already told the story of Masataka Taketsuru, the pioneer of whisky in Japan and founder of the Nikka brand. But what about Nikka in the XXI Century? Two distilleries, two Nikka whisky Nikka owns two distilleries. The Yoichi distillery in Kurokawacho, Hokkaido; the Miyagikyo distillery in Sendai, continental Japan. Each of the two distilleries produces single malt whisky, but very different ones. The Nikka single malt Yoichi has a strong character, with intense and persistent hints of peat. The Nikka single malt Miyagikyo instead is reminiscent of the Speyside single malt whisky: full-bodied, fruity, almost "to eat". Nikka is not only single malt: Nikka’s blends have earned reputation and popularity around the world. Famous among the famous the Nikka from the barrel, a whisky recipe which includes almost one hundred whiskies; the Taketsuru pure malt, the blend of the two Nikka single malt, created in honor of the founder; the Nikka super, a blend from a 1962 recipe in honor of Rita, Taketsuru’s scottish wife. Nikka whisky added more recently new strings to its bow: the Coffey Grains still, a grain whisky made with the Coffey still, and the Nikka Coffey Malt, a malt whisky but again made with the Coffey still.
