Whisky is a classic guest of tasting events as well, and this post is a bridge between tasting with us and your personal experience at home: what do you need to experience your whisky at home, sipping it while you are on your sofa? Here it is some suggestions! First things first: horizontal or vertical? Strictly speaking the concept of horizontal tasting and vertical tasting are related to wine: with a horizontal tasting you experience wines from the same year but from different producers; a vertical tasting involves the same wine, but from multiple years. As whisky has a huge variety, to apply the concept of horizontal tasting comes to many and completely different tasting experience. The widest meaning you can give the concept of horizontal tasting in whisky is to deal with the original completely different groups: Scotch Whisky, Irish Whiskey, Bourbon, Canadian Whiskey, Japanese Whisky. Basically: let choose five whisk(e)ys and travel all around the world with just one tasting session. If you go for the vertical tasting you can reinterpret the tasting to the concept of one tasting one nation. Of course you can organize a more “classic” whisk(e)y tasting with the same label and different vintage, or different label of the same vintage. Whisky tasting… apart from the whisky… Believe it or not, water is a perfect flavour enhancer. Walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, raisins and dark chocolate are a good complement in a whisky tasting event. Escalate! From whisky tasting to whisky dinner Great whisky can be an exceptional substitute of wine in a dinner: use a Skye Scotch whisky for a seafood appetizer, an Irish Whiskey or Bourbon for a Caesar Salad, an Islay Scotch for blue cheese.
